1997 ford taurus. a/c compressor. pls help?

my a/c compressor started making noises. like grinding. and you can hear it . and its getting louder everyday,, where should i go to get it fixed, should i keep driving it. i been 2 a couple of places an every1 tells me a different thing. dont know what to do. some tell me just to change da compressor , while others tell me 2 change the whole thing. thats expensive. 2,ooo dollars approxitmately is what it will cost at 1 place.. so can someone pls help an tell me what to do,, thank you.

The compressor can be replaced by itself but without changing the reciever drier, orifice tube, flushing the system the compressor may not last very long and likely will not be under any warranty. A/C work is expensive work to do.
Reply:Get estimates from several places before you decide, including a Ford Dealer.
Reply:A rebuilt compressor is about $240 and $150 install. You always get a rebuilt. Fixing the old one would cost more and you'd still have a worn out compressor.
Reply:It has probably blown itself apart from the inside. You'll have to replace it, the drier, the orifice tube (if it has one), and then flush it out, and recharge.
