I checked the vents and there is no air coming out and my A/C is still running. What might this be? Will this be expensive to fix?My furnace is 37 yrs. old. Please help with info.
I have a A/C problem, hope someone can help. I heard a clicking noise in the basement.MyA/C is on and running.
The fan that drives the cool air from the A/C compressor into your air ducts is usually a "hamster wheel" fan located in the furnace. This fan is responsible for driving warm air as well when you turn on your heat. The real question is do you just have a faulty fan in the furnace or has one of ducts become detached from the fan source. The A/C compressor is separate from the fan that actually circulates the cool air into your home. You'll hear the A/C compressor and it's fan running whether your circulation fan is running or not. I suggest that you turn off the A/C at the thermostat and then just manually turn the circulation fan on. Most thermostats will have a fan button on them that gives you the option of auto or manual. If yours is in the auto position, switch it to the manual position. When you do this, it turns on the circulation fan to run constantly. If after you've done this and ensured that the A/C is off, check to see if you hear the fan running from the furnace in the basement. (if that's where it's located) if you don't, then that's your problem. (the "hamster wheel" fan) If you DO hear that fan running, check your vents to see if you feel any air coming out. If you don't feel any, the likely problems are a damaged or bent "hamster wheel" circulation fan OR the main duct that attaches to the fan has become detached. Assuming your furnace is as old as you're saying, you're probably getting KILLED on utility bills and probably should consider replacing the whole thing anyway. As far as cost goes, I recently replaced my ENTIRE system (Furnace, coil, fans, ducts and A/C compressor) and upgraded to a state of the art energy effecient system. Nope, it wasn't cheap. About 4K BUT, last year at the same time I replaced it this year, my electric bill for cooling was running about $300-$350 a month! The bill I got 1 month after I replaced it had dropped a WHOPPING 66%! About $200 LOWER than last year! Based on my calculations, in the first year after replacing it I'm expecting to save about $1900-$2100 in heating and cooling expenses in the first year. (I had an ancient system like yours.) At that rate, the thing will pay for itself in 2-2 1/2 years. Well worth the investment!
Good Luck!
Reply:sounds like it froze up on you.... turn it off. turn the switch on you thermostat for theFAN to the ON position. leave it like that overnight. fan on- cool switch to off. if you can feel air coming out in the morning, it was definately frozen up. make sure your air filter is clean. if so, you will need to call a company to come out and charge the system for you. possibly look for a refrigerant leak...
Reply:I suggust u invest in a new furnace and a/c if the furnace is 37 years old the a/c is old too u won't find a professional who's willing to fix this.Plus as stated by someone else you'll save energy costs so it's well worth the investment.
Reply:You could have a dead blower. If your system is that old, you need someone to go over the entire system. Some companies give free estimates, but you must remember, there is no such thing as a free lunch. Call your local HVAC company and let them have a look. You may get through this summer for $100 to $300., or it may be time to replace the entire system at $5k to $15k. There are no dumb questions only dumb answers.
Reply:The clicking sound is probably the compressor trying and failing to start. (Possibly due to a high pressure switch due to the condensor fan not running.) But the inside fan should still be running. You need an a/c tech. The unit may or may not be worth fixing. (Almost any machine can be repaired, but the price of repairs is sometimes higher than a new unit.)
Newer units are so much more efficient that you may be better off in the long run to replace it!
Reply:I'm guessing either the blower or the evaporator coils
37 year old furance is pretty old should be replaced.
When I bought my house the furnace was 40 years old and when they took it out I realized how much of health hazard it was.
