I have a 6 cylinder Ford Explorer with A/C. It doesn't seem to reach cold anymore. The vehicle has 60,000 miles on it, but has never had the frion changed. I'm not really sure what that is, but I know that no one has ever messed with it. I'm not an expert on anything other than changing my oil! Please help this very confused car owner. Basically I need my car cold again, and since I am in Florida it is making my wife and I crazy. If this is something that I can't fix myself, I would at least like to know what it is before take it to a shop and get ripped off. Thanks for your help.
My A/C in my 2003 Ford Explorer is not gettting cold? Could someone help me diagnose the problem?
They don't use freon anymore. Go to autozone or someother parts store and buy the 134 a/c refill kit. The sales people there can make sure you not only get the right kind, but when I went, they showed me where to put it into the system. It'll cost about $40 but it's a cheaper fix than taking it to the mechanic and once you do it, you'll realize how easy it is.
Reply:OK u don't ever need to change freon it does not go bad it can have a leak, and if so the low pressure switch located on the accumulator will not let the compressor come on however you could just have a blown fuse or the automatic climatic control switch in the car could be bad you need to have some a/c experienced to find the problem and u cant guess this stuff on the net no two cars have the same problem if its full of freon that's R134-A freon is not the problem the car is pretty new to have a leak but it could maybe the compressor is out or the thermolimiter switch or the a/c circuit breaker need to have a qualified a/c mechanic to check it out and it might be just a simple one
also ther are only two automotive freons R-12 which is baned in 28 nation and the newer one started in 1993 its R 134-a has no fluorocarbons ozone safe type that the type you have and don't add if you don't know whats wrong the grave yards are full of people that have tried to ad when it does not need it it can explode, 25 years as a A/C automotive mechanic certified in a/c repair
Reply:Well Mr. ctnavyrichie if you do not know what a (1.compressor 2. condensor 3. accumulator 4. expansion valve or orifice tube OR 5.evaporator) is, Sir my good military advice would be to take it to a professional because in the long run you'll be better off. A/C is not an eassily perform task and it's dangerous for the not experience. By law R-12 R-134a are regulated and you must have a licence to purchase it. The OZONE layer suffers when you do not know how to use these chemicals, please think about it. GOOD LUCK!!!!
Reply:Since you have an older model, They liked to use freon in all the vehicles that had A/C. Your best bet would either to have it replaced, Or just buy more freon. If you were to replace it, You'd have to buy a new A/C Unit, %26amp; That'll get expensive.
